He, Karol Józef Wojtyla, known as John Paul II since his election as Pope in October 1978, he was born in Wadowice at Krakow in May 18, 1920. He was the youngest of three children. His sister Olga dies before is birth. His mother died in 1929. Also, his brother Edmund died in 1932 and his father in 1941. In 1938 he enrolled at University in Krakow a theater school. The Nazis closed the university in 1939, and Wojtyla had to work in a quarry and then a chemical factory (Solvay) to avoid deportation to Germany.

Since 1942, he began studied at the clandestine seminary of Krakow. It was one of the pioneers of the "Rhapsodic Theatre," also clandestine. After, the Second World War, he continued his studies at the major seminary of Cracow, once opened, until his priestly ordination in Cracow on November 1, 1946. He was then sent to Rome for studied, after that finished in 1948, he returned to Poland where he was a chaplain the university until 1951; he was professor of Moral Theology and Social Ethics.

On July 4, 1958 Pope Pius XII, named him Titular Bishop of Olmi, and auxiliary of Krakow. He was ordained a Bishop on September 28, 1958 in Wawel Cathedral (Krakow), and the January 13, 1964, he was named Archbishop of Krakow by Pope Paul VI, and then he was Cardinal on June 26, 1967.




He was elected successor Apostle Peter on October 16, 1978.

He changed your name by John Paul II

In assembly of all the world’s Cardinals to election successor new Pope, the Cardinal Wojtyla was elected as Pope on October 16, 1978. With the name by John Paul II, he begins his Petrine Ministry on October 22 and 263rd successor of the Apostle Peter. His pontificate lasted lasted 27 years begins the longest of the Catolic Church. He exercised his ministry with a missionary spirit, where he made 104 apostolic visit outside Italy and 146 inside Italy.

John Paul II, Canonization and Beatification many men and women, as an example of life devoted or consecrated to God and people. Beatified 147, proclaims Blessed 1338 and Canonized 51 for a total of 482 Saints in the Catholic Church now worship in parishes around the world.

The Pope wrote several documents which are recorded legacy: 14 encyclicals, 15 apostolic exhortations, 11 apostolic constitutions and 45 apostolic letters. It also promulgated the Catechism of the Catholic Church. He could amend the Code of Canon Law. Equally, the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches.



Finally, John Paul II died on April 2, 2005. His funeral was held the Papal April 8. For the April 28, the new Pope Benedict XVI issued the recognition of John Paul II, for a heroic life, and that they should wait five years for the cause of Beatification and Canonization. On June 28, 2005 Benedict XVI was opened this case and concluded May 1, 2011, where he unveiled a painting declared Venerable, Blessed and Saint, with the title of John Paul II "The Great".

Malik:  What is your name?.

Diego:  Diego Andres.

Malik:  Where are you from?.

Diego:  Colombia - Cali.

Malik:  How old are you?.
Diego: 28 years old.

Malik:  What you will study in the U.S?.

Diego:  I will study for a PHD in Sociology.

Malik:  Why did you choose ELS Milwaukee?.

Diego:  Because ELS Milwaukee is near UW Madsion.

Malik:  Do you have ELS in your country?.

Diego:  Yes.

Malik:  Can you talk about yourself and your dream?.

Diego: I am interested in social problems in my country, and now my dream is to finish my PHD successfully.

Malik: Can you talk about the culture in your country?.
Diego: Population in my country is around 45,000,000 and we have different places. In each place, for example in the north, people are good and happy because the weather is warm. But in the south it's very cold, and people are not friendly.

Interview With Deacon Yamid Blanco

• Why did you decide to work in the Catholic Church in the United States?.

In 2006 I got a call from a priest friend of mine from Colombia who was working in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. He told me the most beautiful things about Milwaukee. He said; Milwaukee is a multicultural city which is located by Lake Michigan. He also said; Milwaukee is a European City which a lot of people from Germany, Irish, and Poland live in. Therefore, he encouraged me to join the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. He said that, in the city, the Spanish population was growing a lot. He also said; Yamid the Archdiocese of Milwaukee is very organized.  That was very much the reason which helped to make the decision to come to Milwaukee to study to be a priest. I came to the States in July of 2007. I studied English as a second language for about 10 months. Afterwards I began Theology, and now I am in my final year of studies. I was ordained a Deacon in April and will be ordained a priest in May of 2012.     

• What is your work experience in the United States with the Latino community?.

I have not had a lot experience with the Latino Community of Milwaukee. I have been helping out at an Anglo parish since I have been in Milwaukee. I am sure I will be working with the Latino community after being ordained a priest. However I have a lot of friends from Mexico who have invited me to come and join them for Spanish Mass. Even I am going to an Anglo parish I have joined them for Mass once in a while. 

• Will you work in the Latino community in the future?.

As I said above I will be helping out at a Latino Parish “Community” when being a priest. 

• How do you celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in your parish?.

I have not had that experience as of now. I hope I will be celebrating that with the Hispanic Community at my future Latino parish.

• What advice do you have for Latino (priest or seminarian) that come to work here?.

I will tell them that Milwaukee is a city which receives and embrace people from all over the world. I will also tell them that the people of Milwaukee – Anglos and Latinos - are very welcoming, gentle, and nice. 

• The 2010 United States Census states that more than 44 million of Latinos will be migrating to this country looking for better opportunities in life. What do you think about Latinos who are and will be migrating to the United States in future years?.

Migration is an issue that the United States has faced throughout decades. This is a country that has been receiving migrants, not only the wealthy and well-educated but also the poor and the needy as is happening today. This is the time in which a lot of people from Spanish Speaking Countries are coming to the United States with the dream of giving to their families better opportunities in life. We, as Christians, are to support every human being for we are all equal before God; we are the people of God.    

• What were and are the reasons for changes in religious practices in the Latino community?.

The most important reason why the religious practices in the Latino Community had to change and are still changing is because of the big mass of Latino population that began to come to America. Most of them were not really accepted by society so that the Church needed to do something remarkable to embrace and give them the dignity of human beings.
